Everyone loves the vintage and historical look of older homes in New Orleans, they are like beautiful mementos on every corner that display how cultural life was and still is in our beloved city we call home.
Unfortunately, they were designed to cope with the more hot humid months of the years versus the few months of actual cold ones we endure every year. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s these homes were relevant and did exactly what they were to designed to do, but do to modern technology such as central heating and cooling these advances aren’t compatible.
Generally. because your home is designed to stay cool without air conditioning so it is intentionally poorly insulated. This is why its extremely hard to keep your home warm in the colder months. One simple way to solve this problem is insulating the sub floor of your older home. It is applied to the underside of your homes floor and not only well insulates your home but also seals off all those cracks and crevices bugs and rodents always seem to find all year long.
If you are home now, lean over and take a look at your floor. How big are the gaps between your floor? I bet in some places you can see daylight, or even slide a quarter through the cracks right. Don’t worry, this is common in older New Orleans homes and you are currently reading about the solution. Spray foam insulation is the only solution, but not just any spray foam. Closed Cell is the proper spray foam that should be applied to the underside of your homes sub floor. It should be applied with nothing less than a 2 inch average and should most importantly be a 2 pound closed cell foam, most spray foam contractor will try to cut corners and use a 1.6 pound foam which doesn’t meet the proper standing to be considered a vapor blocking foam.
If the proper foam isn’t used your floors can easily buckle and even worse your floors can rot out from right under your feet, resulting in costly repairs later down the road.
